OUR GUIDE TO FINDING THE BEST FOUNDATION FOR DRY, OILY OR COMBINATION SKIN
Finding the foundation that meets your skin’s specific needs and your desired finish can feel like an endless pursuit. Well, we disagree. In fact, we know that with the right tools and no more than ten minutes of dedication, the chances are — whatever your skin type — you’ll pin down your perfect makeup base, and keep it for life. Ready to strike gold?
1. IDENTIFY YOUR SKIN TYPE
First things first: get to know your skin type. It isn’t always obvious, so if you’re yet to get familiar with how your skin behaves, a simple observation should uncover the answer. If an all-eyes-on-skin approach isn’t revealing enough, dig a little deeper by doing a blotting sheet test 30 minutes after cleansing.
Dry skin is typically more dull in tone, often feels tighter and prone to becoming flaky, rough or scaly. A blotting sheet will show little to no difference when pressed all over the face.
Oily skin appears shiny or greasy due to excess sebum, primarily around the T-zone. This can coincide with enlarged pores, blemishes or breakouts. A blotting sheet will turn clear in all areas of the face.
Combination skin types find that the skin behaves differently in different areas of the face. Usually the T-zone will be more oily, whilst the cheeks will be dry. A blotting sheet will turn clear around the T-zone, while remaining more or less the same on the cheeks.
2. FOLLOW THE RULES
Dry skin needs a formula that comes with skincare benefits especially hydrating effects. The best foundations for dry skin will have a serum base infused with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, plus soothing botanicals to calm irritation. Avoid silicones, as these can cling to flaky skin, making it more of a focus.
Oily skin, first and foremost, requires an oil-free formula — additional oil is the last thing your skin needs. The best foundation for oily skin will be water-based, it will mattify skin, and it will be labelled non-comedogenic (that is, free from pore-blocking ingredients).
Combination skin calls for just the right balance. Avoid foundations that are ultra-dewy or ultra-matte.
